The hemoglobin of ascaris body walls

Abstract

The hemoglobin of the body wall of the parasitic nematode, Ascaris lumbricoides, L., has been purified. The sedimentation coefficient, s20,w is 3.1 S. The molecular weight, deduced from sedimentation equilibrium by the method of Yphantis, is 37 000. The molecular weight per heme group, deduced from amino acid analysis, is 35 000, and there is therefore 1 heme group per molecule. The amino acid composition of the body-wall hemoglobin differs from that of the hemoglobin found in the perienteric fluid. The absorption spectrum of the hemoglobin and several of its derivatives are presented. In general they resemble those of perienteric fluid hemoglobin although many maxima are shifted about 2 mμ toward the red. The ferrous derivatives each display maxima at 614-624 mμ, which are not artifacts since they may be seen in the surviving intact body wall.
