Abstract
The fine structure of physiologically different electrocytes in seven genera of weakly electric teleosts is described. The major fine structural differences in these cells relate to specializations of the cell surface, distribution of mitochondria and variations in the filamentous inclusions. The degree of surface proliferation of the parallel faces of electrocytes produced by tubular invaginations of these faces is consistent with the physiological desirability for the electrocytes to match impedances across these faces during spike generation.
