Role of metastable dimers in the theory of induced atomic fluorescence

Abstract

It is found that the reduction of the induced-atomic-fluorescent signal due to the excitation of metastable dimers is significant. A reanalysis of experimental data on Na2 is presented which shows a milder variation of the transition moment with internuclear separation than obtained previously.
