Prenatal diagnosis of single umbilical artery by ultrasound

Abstract

The normal human umbilical cord contains two arteries and one vein. One umbilical artery (UA) is absent in about 1% of all singleton births and in as many as 7-14% of twin gestations. There is an increased incidence of a single umbilical artery (SUA) among abortions, fetuses with trisomy E or D, and offspring of diabetic mothers. The anomaly is also frequently associated with other nonspecific congenital fetal malformations. The reported incidence of such associated anomalies ranges from 17% among whites to as high as 42.1% among blacks. There is an even higher incidence of malformations associated with single umbilical arteries among stillbirths and neonatal deaths.
