BIOETHICAL ISSUES IN DEMENTIA AND ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE

Tia Powell

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

This chapter provides a concrete framework for determining whether and when people with dementia ought to be supervised or restricted in participating in domains that are fraught with risks. Powell holds that making this ethically valanced decision requires understanding the progression of the illness as it affects the decision-making capacities of a person with dementia, careful attention to how limitations and restrictions pose risks to autonomy and dignity of persons with dementia, as well as a complex understanding of the vulnerabilities unique to persons with dementia.
