Abstract

Full-term and preterm infants were tested for visual following of moving objects at 44 and 48 weeks postconceptional age. There was a significant increase in following from 1 to 2 months with no difference between the full-term and preterm groups. When the preterm group was divided on the basis of several early measures of neonatal neurobehavioral function, the deviant subgroup showed less following than either the full-terms or the normal preterms. There were also some differences in responsiveness to different stimulus characteristics.
