(Oct. 22 issue)1 are to be congratulated on their use of very sensitive assays to detect infection with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) in neonates and infants. However, in their Discussion the authors state that the frequency of transmission of this virus from infected women to their fetuses is not known and that there is an apparent absence of the viral genome in fetal tissues.
