Abstract

Tumor reduction according to the SIPAP-classification, postoperative complications, pre-and postoperative vision field, acuity and hormonal function were assessed in 51 patients who had performed a pituitary adenoma extirpation at Umeå University Hospital, Umeå, Sweden. Before surgery 42 patients had a supra-sellar tumor growth. Postoperatively only 13 patients had some supra-sellar tumor rest. Twenty-three out of 32 patients with preoperative visual field impairment was cured or had improved visual fields after surgery. A majority of the patients developed one or more hormonal insufficiency postoperatively, in particular regarding the ACTH-production. Our results are comparable with centres with far higher rat of operations per year.
