Treatment of Ventricular Tachycardia

Abstract

To the Editor: Two methods for empirically testing drugs for antiarrhythmic efficacy were compared by Mitchell et al. (Dec. 31 issue).1 They used a noninvasive procedure, electrocardiographic monitoring, and an invasive procedure, electrophysiologic study. These two procedures can be considered different decision strategies, and decision analysis should be considered in the interpretation of the study of Mitchell et al. At least two properties of decision analysis have implications for the study: sensitivity, the likelihood that the test will identify the drug when the drug is effective, and specificity, the likelihood that the test will reject the drug when it is.
