Abstract

Twenty-eight patients with devascularizing injuries to the upper and lower extremities were treated with the Wagner external fixator. Most of the injuries were open fractures with extensive skin and subcutaneous tissue damage. The Wagner device proved effective in providing stable fracture fixation, which is of utmost importance in securing sound vessel repair, ensuring good soft tissue coverage, and in permitting functional aftercare. From this experience, the authors state the Wagner device is the external fixator of choice for these injuries.
