The National Diabetes Education Program is a joint initiative sponsored by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases of the National Institutes of Health and the Division of Diabetes Translation of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( 12 ). National Diabetes Education Program partners include public and private organizations with the mission of reducing the morbidity and mortality associated with diabetes and its complications. Participating public and private organizations include the Indian Health Service, the Department of Veterans Affairs, the American Diabetes Association, the American College of Physicians, the American Dietetic Association, and the American Association of Diabetes Educators. The National Diabetes Education Program provides guidance for developing local partnerships to address diabetes prevention and treatment. The 10 essential public strategies provide dietitians with ideas for collaboration and partnering to develop action plans in their own practice setting. In addition, the American Dietetic Association and its state and local associations can use the public health strategies in planning activities to address diabetes and concomitant obesity epidemics.
