Abstract

A simplified procedure for 99mTc-gentisic acid or 99mTc-HMPAO-labelling of leukocytes in pediatric patients has been developed. For this purpose leukocytes were isolated from 3-10 ml. of whole blood and labelled, washed and resuspended in saline isotonic solution avoiding vial replacement. Validation of the technique was carried out with respect to 'in vitro' cell viability, sterility, phagocytic and chemotactic functions which remained unaffected. Labelling efficiencies employing 3 ml. of whole blood were 51 ± 8% and 47 ± 5% for 99mTc-HMPAO and 99mTc-gentisic acid respectively. The procedure described herein was used successfully in our clinic for scintigraphic localization of inflammatory lesions and abscesses in children.
