Abstract

The link between HIV and substance use is well established. Substance use and substance use disorder are directly and indirectly related to HIV transmission, delayed diagnosis, entry into care, and worse treatment outcomes. Communities of color are disproportionately affected by negative consequences of HIV and substance use due to structural and societal barriers and risk factors. Treatment for substance use and integration of HIV and substance use treatment lead to improved health outcomes. With particular attention to race and ethnicity, this chapter discusses the prevalence of drug use in people living with HIV, the link between HIV and substance use, substance use treatment and HIV prevention and treatment, and integration of HIV and substance use treatment.
