Abstract

The importance of propelling devices and their role in flow injection (FI) approaches are reviewed. A description of the main propelling devices, with especial emphasis on peristaltic pumps as the most common of these devices in FI, is performed. Proper programming of pumps gives place to modes, such as stopped-flow, flow-reversal, flow-gradient, and time-based injection, which clearly enhance the versatility and field of application of FI, as demonstrated by key examples.
