Abstract

A STUDY was carried out, based on laboratory test records of patients attending hospital, into the incidence of monoclonal gammopathy in the West of Ireland. Two hundred and ninety-six fully verified cases occurred in a seven and a half year period, giving an incidence for the study of 9.2 cases per population per annum. A diagnosis of malignancy was confirmed on 126 cases from the Western Health Board part of Connacht, either multiple myeloma (117 cases, or 47.4% of W.H.B. monoclonal gammo-pathies) or Waldenström's Macroglo-bulinaemia (9, 3.6%). The incidence of multiple myeloma was found to be 4.5 cases per 100,000 cases per annum. No diagnosis was obtained on many of the remaining 170 cases. A notable feature was the concentration of monoclonal gammopathy and multiple myeloma in certain areas. The basis for this variation is discussed.
