Abstract

It is nowadays well established that diabetes results from interplays between genetic and environmental factors. Viral infections can play a role in the onset, maintenance or exacerbation of metabolic disorders observed in diabetes. In addition to the two major forms of diabetes (type 1 [T1D], type 2 [T2D]), atypical diabetes (Ketosis-prone diabetes, KPD) has emerged as the third leading presentation of diabetes in sub-Saharan Africans. Some viral infections have been identified as risk or causal factors of metabolic disorders observed in these three diabetes phenotypes such as enteroviruses in T1D, hepatitis C virus and HIV in T2D, human herpes virus 8 in KPD.
