Abstract

Proper perioperative and postoperative management are imperative in patients with type 1 (T1D) and type 2 diabetes (T2D) to ensure optimal surgical preparation and care and overall positive prognosis. Although general guidelines are provided by the American Diabetes Association, additional special considerations should be taken depending on each patient’s comorbidities, the type of surgery under consideration, home hyperglycemic agents (oral medications and insulin dosages), and oral intake prior to and preceding surgery. Here we provide a summary of perioperative outpatient and inpatient glycemic guidelines for patients with T1D and T2D.
