Abstract

As the global population continues to age, physiatrists are presented with an expanding patient population seeking to maintain functional independence as long as possible. In their quest to prevent disability, older individuals benefit from physician interventions, including counseling, conditioning, and rehabilitation services. Physiologic changes, training principles, preconditioning assessment, proven exercise modalities, and injury prevention are all reviewed to provide an overview of issues that may arise for patients seeking physiatric support at any point while planning or undergoing conditioning to prevent future disability.
