Abstract
Delivery of rehabilitation to critically ill patients early in their intensive care unit (ICU) stay is now recommended by critical care expert guidelines. The physiatrist has an important role to play in both implementation and development of “Early Mobilization” programs that utilize many members of the traditional PMR team. Understanding the evolution of ICU rehabilitation in the context of modern sedation practices is essential for any provider involved in these programs. The intent of this review is to introduce the principles of early mobilization and summarize the compelling literature supporting their use.
