Abstract

The epidemiology of diabetes in women is reviewed, focusing on risk factors for developing diabetes and its complications. The article addresses body image and how factors such as readiness to make lifestyle changes may affect women with diabetes. Issues such as metabolic control and barriers to achieving metabolic control are also addressed. Medical nutrition therapy recommendations and their implementation for women in various stages of the lifecycle are discussed. Issues that may affect implementation of medical nutrition therapy for women with gestational diabetes, eating disorders, cardiovascular disorders, and other complications are also discussed.
