Abstract
A review of the history of cardiac allotransplantation with emphasis on the scientific advances made in the field in the last 25 years. The role of cardiac xenotransplantation as a promising alternative to allotransplantation for permanent cardiac transplantation in the treatment of end-stage heart disease is discussed.
