193 nm excimer laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy during corneal ablative surgery

Abstract

The evolution of real-time laser-induced fluorescence at progressive corneal depths detected during excimer laser corneal ablative surgery at 193 nm excitation was investigated using an 8.5 mm corneal button trephined from a fresh frozen cadaveric human globe, and placed in the ablative 192 nm excimer laser beam path. The spectra of the initial epithelial ablation - consecutive spectra taken in the anterior to mid-stroma after lamellar keratomileusis and subsequent laser ablation, and the initial spectrum taken while ablating from the endothelial side was demonstrated. A striking progression of the spectra was observed as ablation progresses from the epithelial side towards the endothelial side.
